Children at all the seven NurtureStars Preschool centres observed Singapore’s 58th birthday before the actual day of 9 August. It was an opportunity for them learn what it means to be Singaporeans United as One in our multi-cultural society.

The children turned up for school in red and white and were each given a mini state flag to support and cheer each other in their celebration activities for the day.

The teachers began the celebration telling stories of Singapore’s independence and its success in nation building and why the theme for this year is “Onward As One”. They also learned about the significance of the crescent moon and five stars on the Singapore flag.

For bonding activities, they sang and danced to National Day songs such as “We are Singapore”, “HOME” and “Stand up for Singapore”. The children also did craft work such as fashioning the Singapore flag by pasting together heart-shaped paper cut-outs or colouring it on paper plates.

At NurtureStars Toa Payoh, children took part in a Little Entrepreneurs Project with the theme “A Nation of Kindness Starts with Me”. It was a carnival to raise funds for NurtureStars’ chosen charity, the Ju Eng Home for Senior Citizens.

Parents joined their children to bond at the carnival in various games such as Mini Golf, City Hoops, Plinko, Animal Kampung and Bouncy Castle for those above 3 years old. Delicious treats were also made available at a Snack Bar. The project raised $3,000 for the Ju Eng Home.

The celebration at all the centres concluded with the singing of our national anthem and the recitation of the pledge. After that, the children had group photos taken of them waving the national flag and wishing Singapore a “Happy Birthday”.
