On Earth Day, 22 April 2021, children at all the NurtureStars Preschool centres participated in a variety of activities in support of this year’s theme “Restore Our Earth”.
The teachers shared with the children how Earth Day observance came about and used the opportunity to encourage children to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” to help protect the environment. All the centres had their own activity programmes.
NurtureStars @ Tampines encouraged parents to engage their children in recycling materials for their home learning link projects. The children also took the Earth Day Pledge do their part to reduce waste, recycle and save the Earth.
At NurtureStars Mount Faber, parents were invited to join their children in a poster design contest to spread awareness on saving the Earth. The centre also collaborated with Bukit Panjang CC and Singapore Environment Council on a Green Learning Journey via zoom to educate children on:
- The benefits of plants (Understanding of the Earth and natural resources)
- Saving Water & Electricity (Understanding why we need to conserve natural resources)
- Reducing & Recycling (Understanding what we can do to protect the environment)
The children at NurtureStars Jurong collected used materials and recycled them to decorate the class display board with some craft work. The children were also taught the significance of Earth Day. Lights in the classrooms were switched off for one hour for them to experience how it was like to carry out their activities in the dark.
The children at NurtureStars Toa Payoh had inter-class competition, we also get our children to play a part to save our earth by drawing and pasting cut-outs on the templates.
Over at NurtureStars Punggol, children were shown examples of how pollution could harm the environment, humans and animals and were encouraged to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”. They used recycled plastic bottles, bottle caps, plastic bags and cardboards to create artworks of the various sea creatures that have been greatly affected by all the plastic waste in the ocean.
